Dear Jeff – I’m so glad we got the chance to work together. Thank you for your contribution to the making of our movie. Look for it in theatres next Christmas. Wishing you a happy holiday season. Best of luck to you in your new space.
Disney’s Saving Mr Banks
Not all reclaimed lumber sources and woodworkers are created equal. They all say the know what they’re doing, but… If you have a project begging for a rustic or vintage touch, skip the other options and come to Silverado Salvage. They simply can’t be beat for responsiveness, clear communication, quality materials, and reasonable pricing for excellent quality delivered.
We own a funky home–built 100 years ago as a board and batten shack out of rough sawn first growth redwood and Douglas Fir. It’s simple–what you see is what you get. The walls are one inch thick. Mill marks sweep across the massive beams and plank walls. Each hinge was standard barn or gate issue cut into decorative shapes by the builder–a shop teacher from Indiana. It’s a pretty cool place, but devilishly tricky when it comes to making repairs and improvements because if work is not in keeping with the home, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
We found Silverado Salvage and met Jeff, the owner, when we were scouring nearby salvage yards & yelped before heading back home. We are so glad we did!! We saw a beautiful piece of reclaimed barn siding, weathered gray, crusted with red, golden and green-gray lichen. Jeff had just brought it from the Central Coast. The wood sparked a conversation about how we needed a front gate…
The following week, Jeff brought the wood to our home to discuss gate ideas and options. We talked and shared pictures. He “got” the house and our vision for a gate. He mocked up a gate sample.
Jeff warned us to act fast on the reclaimed barn lumber if we were interested, but it took us an extra week to decide how much we’d need. Alas, by the time we were ready, not enough wood remained from the supplier for our project!
Jeff’s solution was to spend a scorching afternoon personally scouring through another supplier’s wood selection, hand-picking the wood for our project, board by board. He acquired for us a jaw-dropping collection of gorgeous lumber, then set to work securing a trustworthy, reputable gate installer to create an automated frame that Silverado would then clad with our vintage lumber.
Coordinating around our schedule and regularly checking to make sure we were satisfied, Silverado just finished for us a show-stopper of a gate–whisper quiet mechanically, but it looks like it could have been here 80 years. Dennis even hand-treated the hardware to create a marbled rusty patina, in keeping with the weathered wood. Every last detail was meticulously overseen by Jeff and we can’t wait to dream up another project for an excuse to work with the Silverado again.
Thank you, Jeff and the Silverado team! Working with you was a positive pleasure.
